After we relished ourselves on vegetables, fruits, potatoes, cheese, meat and most of all bread with Nutella, we left El Calafate. It was hard, but necessary. Continue reading

Paradise; El Calafate
After those 2 days of doing nothing, it was time to move on. Everything in the NP is very expensive and there’s not a lot for sale, so it was time to hit the road again. Gijs and Karen had arrived the previous afternoon and they also were going to leave the next day. They had taken the bus from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales and cycled to the NP. There they went hiking for a few days. Continue reading
More miles
On Friday morning we left B&B Ruta 40, even though it was very tempting to stay. It was raining hard and we could have done our laundry if we had wanted to. The only reason we still decided to leave was the fact that the wind was blowing from the South, so we would have tailwind all the way to San Sebastian. Continue reading
There’s no such thing as coincedence
We left Tolhuin this morning to go to Rio Grande. Late last night, another guest arrived; a Mexican guy who lives in Belgium. A very interesting guy. But this morning it was time to go on and say goodbye. The moment we got on our bikes, it started raining and it didn’t stop. Only at the very end it finally stopped. The road went downhill and then became flat with a few hills. Paradise for us! Only in the beginning we had headwind, but then it changed and we had tailwind! Continue reading
The bakery in Tolhuin after another hard day
But the next day it was time to go on. We wanted to try to get to Tolhuin, the next town on the route. It was about 60 miles from the estancia. And we had to go back on the same unpaved road as on our way over. Fortunately it didn’t seem as bad this way. Continue reading
Restday
We decided not to go on the next day, but visit the estancia. It was a good decision. The weather was much better, the legs needed the rest and we had a very nice day. Continue reading
The first day
We survived the first (hard) days of cycling. From Ushuaia we cycled to the Estancia Harberton which was about 60 miles. The first part was all paved. It started going up from the start, once in a while it went downhill for a little bit but then back up. So it was hard work from the start! Continue reading
Departure day
Today we finally leave the safe haven of Ushuaia and our hotel. Yesterday we went grocery shopping and got gas to cook on. We have plenty of food, so we can survive for a while. A lot of stuff, but fortunately everything fits nicely in the bags and they’re not even as heavy as we expected. But still heavy enough! Continue reading
First spin
Yesterday, we took our bikes for a first spin over here. We cycled to the National Park Tierra del Fuego, which is about 15 miles from the city. Most of the road was unpaved and it went up and down a lot. A good practice… It is beautiful over there; lakes, rivers, snowy mountains, forests and the Beagle Canal. Continue reading
The adventure of travelling
We arrived in Ushuaia on Wednesday afternoon. WE did, but our luggage did not… Only Linda’s bike was there, nothing else. The other bike and all 3 of our bags had disappeared. The other bike was already missing in Buenos Aires. A big hustle to get that sorted out, but I’m proud of myself because I did it all in Spanish. The bike hadn’t been on our flight from Rome, but would come over on the next flight. It would be transported to Ushuaia on a later flight. Okay, not too bad.
