There are 2 (easy) ways to travel from the South Island to the North Island (and the other way around); by air or over water. Continue reading
An adventurous week
When we left Motueka, we knew the weather was going to be bad for the next 2 days; storm and a lot of rain. Continue reading
A short break
The last stretch of West Coast took us to Westport. It’s a beautiful coast, with tropical vegetation. Also, there are the ‘Pancake Rocks’, rocks that look like stacked pancakes.
Continue readingArthur’s Pass
We wanted to cross to the West Coast again and therefor we had to go over Arthur’s Pass, the oldest pass in the country. The Maori’s already used this pass for hunting. The plan was to follow the main road, almost back to Christchurch and then go over the pass. That meant that we also had to go over Porter’s Pass; higher and steeper than Arthur’s Pass. But then another cyclist gave us a very good tip. Continue reading
Ocean to alps
After a rainy and stormy day in Dunedin, we left to go inland again on a cloudy morning. We hoped the weather would be better there. And yes, it didn’t take long before the sun came out, the sky turned blue and the temperature rose to around 30 C (80 F). Continue reading
Going South
We met another Dutch couple, Vincent and Jeanette, in Wanaka and we decided to cycle to Queenstown together. We chose the route via little ski town Cardrona and the Crown Range. Continue reading
Our luck…!
After a stormy and hot day in Hanmer Springs, we decided to leave anyway. The wind had died down a bit, but it was still very windy. And of course, we still had a headwind. Continue reading
Long flight
On the last day of 2014, we booked our flight to New Zealand; departure date Januari 11th. So we didn’t have a lot of time to prepare, but we didn’t need it either. All the travelstuff we had just put away had to be repacked. Continue reading
Another trip
Our bikes and bodies have had enough rest, so we decided to go cycling again before we really have to go back to work. It wasn’t hard to pick New Zealand as a destination because it’s summer there now and therefor a good period to be there. We booked our tickets last week; we leave on Sunday, January 11 for a 3 month trip to faraway New Zealand.
We will fly to Christchurch, on the South Island, and will start our trip there. First we’ll explore this island before we’ll take the ferry to the North Island and will cycle up to Auckland. We want to try to avoid the main roads as much as possible to be able to enjoy peace, quietness and beautiful nature. On April 5 we will fly home from Auckland.
We will (try to) write about our adventures regularly and post it on this website.
2015!
Happy New Year! We wish everybody a happy, healthy, active, adventurous and prosperous 2015!
