Valparaiso

After a day of rest in Pichilemu we cycled to Valparaiso in 2 days. This harbor city is built on 45 hills and is on the Unesco world heritage list. There are many colored houses and very old escalators (funiculars; sort of cable cars that go uphill and are being pulled over a track by a cable) that help people get up the hills.

We did a boattrip through the harbor so we had a good look at the huge ships. There also was a colony of sealions who live permanently in the harbor.

We were in a hostal called Villa Kunterbunt, which is the name of the house of Pipi Longstocking, and it really looks like her house. Officially it’s no hostal anymore, but they have rooms for motorcyclists who have their motorcycles shipped to Valparaiso. They help them with that and when the bikes arrive, the drivers can stay in Villa Kunterbunt to prepare their trip. Mainly Germans go there because the owner is German and the hostal seems to be very known by motorcyclists from over there. We got the address from other cyclists who had also stayed there. They liked the place so much that they ended up staying for a week.

When we arrived there, all the rooms were full. But we were invited to have a cup of coffee/tea to relax for a moment and when that was almost finished we got the offer to sleep on the floor of the living room. A few mattresses on the floor and done. We were fine with that, we were tired and didn’t feel like looking for another place and we had had a good time already. There were many motorguys and a couple that had their camper shipped to Valparaiso. It was a nice and cheerful place. A couple of people left the next day, so we could move to the tower room; a very cute little room with a great view on the city. So, even though we hadn’t really planned on going to Valparaiso, we had a very good time.
