Unfortunately we weren’t able to cycle many kilometers/miles through Guatemala, only a part in the South and a part in the North. We were forced to travel the rest of the country by bus so we only went to the touristy towns of the country. We’re sorry we weren’t able to see more of the country, because we would have liked to get to know it better.
Especially in the mountains, at Lake Atitlan, we had the impression of being back in Bolivia and Peru. The markets like they have over there were back and the women (and some of the men) were wearing traditional clothing.
It also was very touristy in the lake area, it’s a real backpacker destination. The lake itself is nicely situated between the surrounding mountains. It’s said that it’s the most beautiful lake in the world, but we can’t and don’t want to agree with that. Yes, it’s beautiful over there but there are so many beautiful places and lakes in the world.
Antigua was a nice town with some nice, colorful buildings. Flores was very small and touristy and Tikal was mysterious.
The rest of the country we saw from the bus. It was very mountainous and hilly, there were no flat parts. But it is beautiful; some areas are rugged, hot and dry and others are green and wet.
