Another ferry ride

And again we took the ferry. Whittier is close to Anchorage, so we could cycle over pretty easily. But to get there, you have to go through a long, narrow tunnel which is built for trains. You’re not allowed to cycle through, so you have to find another way to get through. You can wait at the toll booth for cars and ask if they want to give you a ride, or you can take the train. We just wanted to go over and try to get a ride. If nobody wanted to take us through, then we could still take the train.

But here, too, Susie came up with a way easier sollution; she was going to take us to Whittier. So the bikes went on the bikerack of the campervan and we left in pouring rain to go to Whittier. Such luxury again! Fortunately it was dry when we arrived at the boat dock, so we didn’t get wet getting on board. Susie left and then we were back on our own.

We could board almost immediately and found a spot to sleep. It was the same vessel as on our way up and we just took the same spot we had then.

The ferry left around midnight, so it was time to go to bed right away. The next day the weather wasn’t to great, so we spent the day reading.

After 1,5 days and 2 nights, we arrived in Juneau where we could stay with Stephanie and John again. Fortunately, this time we had a bit more time; our next ferry would leave 2 days later. When we arrived, the weather was beautiful; sunny and nice and warm. It would stay like that for the next couple of days and we enjoyed it very much. We took the canoe for a paddle and saw a bald eagle very close by on the beach. Such a beautiful animal!

We cycled back to the dock in bright sunlight and boarded the ferry for the last part; another 1,5 days and 2 nights to Prince Rupert in Canada. It was a different vessel this time, but here also was plenty of room to sleep. The weather stayed beautiful and we could sit on deck in the sun. This part of the route also was very beautiful; instead of a lot of open water, this time we went through narrow fjords, passed many little islands and small towns. Once in a while we would have company; whales, dolphins or seals would try to keep up and eagles flew over.

They say Prince Rupert is one of the wettest places in Canada, but we didn’t notice that at all. From the moment we arrived till the moment we left, the weather was hot and sunny.
